Who is Required to Use ELD?

The ELD applies to most motor carriers and drivers who are currently required to maintain records of duty status (RODS).  ELD rules apply to commercial buses as well as trucks, and to Canada- and Mexico-domiciled drivers.

There are a variety of exemptions for scenarios like:

  • older vehicles
  • certain agricultural use
  • short haul – when a driver does not operate outside of the 150 air-mile radius for more than 8 days during any 30-day period
  • oil well wait time
  • certain emergency and natural disaster related situations

Fleet managers should make sure their drivers are aware of the regulations and exemptions that apply to them.

Questions about the regulations that apply to you and your drivers should be directed to your local FMCSA field office.
