The California Clean Truck Check program

overseen by the California Air Resource Board (CARB), is a crucial initiative impacting heavy-duty vehicles in the state. It aims to identify and address the pollution caused by poorly maintained trucks, particularly those over 14,000 pounds operating in California. This program, now in its second phase with a third phase approaching, sets standards for emissions testing and reporting to reduce harmful emissions significantly.

The Clean Truck Check program has three main phases:

Phase one: This phase began on January 1, 2023, with roadside systems monitoring emissions from vehicles to identify high-polluting ones.
Phase two: From October 1, 2023, to December 31, 2023, vehicle owners had to register their vehicles in the Clean Truck Check database and pay a compliance fee. The reporting deadline has been extended to December 31, 2024.
Phase three: The implementation of periodic testing requirements will start on January 1, 2025. Vehicles with On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) systems will need semi-annual testing initially, increasing to quarterly in 2027.
